Women in Song Dynasty China

Gong Li in Curse of the Golden Flower Our latest primary source discussion thread is now available at our discussion board. We’ll be exploring primary sources related to everyday society, families, and women’s roles within them during the Song dynasty. Don’t forget to head to the page there and share your thoughts on our readings before Friday’s class.

As background, we’ll have a lecture in class on Wednesday that introduces the shifts in family and women’s lives between the Tang and the Song dynasty, and which also takes a closer look at the varied roles (wives, concubines, maids, and others…) that women held in Song dynasty society.
